Youtube Project Reflection
Making a Youtube video can seem intimidating at first. Depending on what platform the user is making their video on, it can be pretty user friendly. The two most popular programs are Adobe Premier Pro and iMovie. Either one will work depending on your personal preference.
Using iMovie was a fairly simple process. The platform was user friendly and simple. It seemed to have a more simple layout than Adobe Premiere Pro, which is easier for a beginner who has never made a video before. Uploading clips and moving them around in order proved to be made easy by iMovie. The most challenging part of making a video on iMovie was figuring out how to properly convert the video into a file that I could post on Youtube. At first, converting the file seemed difficult. There are many different types of files that the user is able to convert it to, so it’s important to convert it to one that will work. Once the file is saved on the computer, uploading the video to Youtube is very user friendly. Youtube basically guides you through the process. Depending on the video size, it takes less than five minutes.
Making sure the clips you record have proper audio quality ended up being a little difficult. Audio that sounds completely fine on an iPhone can sound low quality on a laptop. Using music over the videos helped with this a lot. Something that would’ve been helpful during this process would have been learning how to isolate background noise in a video. That task sounds daunting and possibly complicated, but it may have helped. For the purpose of this assignment though, it wouldn’t be necessary because of the use of music.
Another challenging step of the editing process is making sure each clip smoothly transitions to the next. IMovie has many different transitions you can put into your video. It can be challenging to input them into the video smoothly.
Using video as a communication tool can be useful if the person is trying to showcase an experience. In this case, students had to show their life in quarantine. Showing clips that summarize their day to day life is a lot more productive than writing about it or just posting pictures. A short video is enough to give an accurate glimpse into someone's life, while also not dragging it out and boring the viewer. Photographs might be the second most useful way to show life in quarantine. However, photographs don’t have the advantage of being live.
The public nature of the content of this video did not seem to affect the subject matter chosen. Since it is a self-portrait experience, some students may feel uncomfortable being personal with students and professors. Although it may seem a bit daunting, recording your life during quarantine is supposed to be personal. The purpose of the video assignment is to give the other students a glimpse into your daily life during the pandemic. While accumulating footage for the video, some of the clips seemed like they may be monotonous. However, it's important to remember that day to day life in quarantine is generally not the most exciting. To create an authentic video that gives people a window into your life, including just the day to day routine is necessary. It’s also important to include the steps of your routine or day that emphasize the fact that this is a pandemic. Showing parts such as going to work felt a bit odd because that is quite personal. Going to work during the pandemic before many businesses shut down was a necessary step to showcase. Once restaurant jobs lowered their capacity limit, it was important to emphasize that part. Using videography to communicate an idea is a creative way to get a message across.
An aspect that ended up being important was being symbolic in clips. Although showcasing your day to day life may be monotonous, it's still important to show things in each clip that show a creative, yet accurate representation of your life. In my video, I showed this by ending the video by showing myself walking my dog, and then the screen fading to black. It was something simple that had a creative touch.
When it comes to uploading the video to different platforms, Youtube was an easy platform. Uploading it to the blogger website proved to be more difficult. Figuring out to embed the videos is difficult. Learning how to embed videos easily is something that comes with practice. In general, making this video was a positive experience.
